STBD's "How to Make a Web Series" Session from PodCamp

At PodCamp Pittsburgh 2, STBD creator Justin Kownacki hosted a session on how to create a sustainable web series.

Alterna-tv's Tony Letizia was in attendance, and he wrote up a lengthy recap of that session here.

“All social media, whether it’s journalism, whether it is a family blog, whatever it is, everything that’s been successful has been successful because you’re telling a story,” [Kownacki] remarked. (More)

Techburgh Interviews STBD

Andy Quayle and Kaylynn at Techburgh interviewed STBD creator Justin Kownacki and actor Will Guffey (Leo) last week at the Creative Treehouse.

Hear Justin pontificate about the future of web media while laying prone on a couch in a horribly unflattering position! Thrill as Will hones his repertoire for that eventual Inside the Actor's Studio visit. Fame, thy name is Techburgh...

STBD 5-2: Revealed!

This week's episode of STBD included some brand new locations, a cameo appearance and the return of a missing cast member. (Not bad for 8 and a half minutes!)

The Making of "Leo's Lucky Day" involved:

- 4 versions of a script

- 1.5 hours of raw footage

- 5 shoots in 4 days

- 18+ hours of editing

Fun Facts, Scene by Scene:

* STBD creator Justin Kownacki and actor Will Guffey (aka Leo Straub) were interviewed by Andy Quayle and Kaylynn for the Techburgh podcast last week. Immediately afterward, they returned the favor by appearing on STBD as Leo's number one fan and uninterested bus stop denizen, respectively.

* The bus stop that opens the episode is in Squirrel Hill, but the stop Leo is waiting at is in Bellevue...

* When Dierdre mentions she's still in school, Caroline's shock and surprise really mirrors that of the entire STBD creative team; we'd completely forgotten Dierdre was still in school all these years, until Lacey Fleming (Dierdre) mentioned it in a story meeting...

* The new Vanity Press meeting room and break room are located inside The Art Institute of Pittsburgh... because the original Vanity Press location has been long gone (to us, anyway).

* Gloria's pills? Actually Vitamin C tablets...

* Rich's admonition for Gloria to "Apologize!" to his manhood? Improvised.

* Todd living homeless behind Affogato? Invented, literally, the day of filming when Matt Pavlosky (Todd) mentioned he was available.

Cross-Post: STBD Grounded?

Kownacki and occasional STBD crew member Jeremy Brok are not pleased.

STBD creator Justin Kownacki is supposed to be speaking on Monday at Blogference, a social media conference in Israel. Instead, he's at home in Pittsburgh because a connecting flight from Delta was canceled due to rain.

Follow the timeline (to be updated when possible) here.

10 Things We Love About Pittsburgh

How could we leave out bridges? Photo by Bridgepix.

The folks at the Church of the Customer blog are moving to Austin from Chicago. On their way out the door, they stopped to mention 10 Things They Love About Chicago. Then they encouraged their readers to create their own lists in their own cities.

Thus, some of the STBD cast and crew -- Erik Schark (Rich), Ryan Ben (Tim), Rick Hertzig (Glenn) and Elise Yacovone (one of our new cast members, whom you'll see in Season Five), as well as creator Justin Kownacki -- pontificated and came up with the following:

Ten Things We Love About Pittsburgh:

10. Enough great locally owned coffee shops that I never have to resort to Starbuck's. (Rick)

9. I love playing a game called "Left / Right / Straight" in Pittsburgh. You get in a car with a bunch of friends and the person in shotgun at each intersection tells the driver "left/right/straight." It's a great way to see this beautiful city. (Ryan)

8. Inexpensive housing and low cost of living. Where else can you get hardwood floors and convenience in a nice, livable area for only $400+? (Elise)

7. The library system. You can search through all of the area libraries and find pretty much anything you want: graphic novels, movies, TV series, etc. You can then request that the item be sent to your local branch, and they'll send you an e-mail when it's ready to be picked up. You can even see where you are in the queue for it. It's fantastic, and it's actually a huge step up from the NYC Public Library system. (Erik)

6. Nature. Pittsburgh is nestled in a temperate river valley, which means the summers are pleasant and the winters are mild. It's bordered by three rivers and features dozens of parks, nature trails and bike paths -- great for the outdoorsy among us. (Justin)

5. Cuisine. Notable restaurants we've frequented lately include Abay, Gypsy Cafe, Red Room, and Zaw's in Sq Hill. Plus, Deluca's in the Strip for breakfast - the best buckwheat pancakes in town! (Elise & Rick)

4. The financial support for the arts. I have friends who moved here from NYC and founded a theatre company. They got instant support from businesses, grants, even a donation of a performance space. They also immediately got press and media attention for their efforts. This doesn't happen anywhere else. (Erik)

3. Driveability. Granted, our public transit isn't what it could (or should) be, but the resultant dependency on cars means everyone has a different route for getting everywhere. Say what you will about the frequent gridlock on the Parkways, but you can get just about anywhere in Allegheny County in 40 minutes or less, no matter the time of day. (Justin)

2. It's a small enough place that the media takes note of things I've promoted (PodCamp Pittsburgh, STBD, Creative TreeHouse) yet it's a large enough place that the country notices when something happens here. I feel like I can actually make a difference not only to Pittsburgh and its residents but also in how the country and the world views Pittsburgh. It's very empowering. (Erik)

1. The neighborhoods! Within the city limits, you have such a great variety of completely different neighborhoods -- from chi-chi Shadyside to up-and-coming arty areas like Lawrenceville, and the ever-popular South Side. (This is why, when people complain that "there's nothing to do here," I get so mad!) (Elise)

What do you think of our list? Agree? Disagree? Add your own suggestions!

STBD Sports Night

STBD creator Justin Kownacki will be taking part in tonight's Sportsocracy talkcast on TalkShoe @ 7:30 PM EST. The show is 60 minutes long and covers topics ranging from the NCAA Tournament to the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pirates and Steelers.

Listen live or join in and find out (among other things) why Kownacki -- who's been watching college basketball for 17 years -- came in (nearly) dead last in the Sportsocracy Pittsburgh Celebrity NCAA Pool. (Hint: it's all Long Beach State's fault...)

[UPDATE: The show went very well. Some very smart sports fans make that show run very smoothly, all things considered. Lots of insights I wouldn't have expected -- which is exactly why I'd make time to listen to a show like Sportsocracy...]

Justin Kownacki Ego Trip

Evidently, some people were more impressed with my speech from VON than others.

Squarely in the fan corner is media executive David Eckoff, who writes:

"I have seen the future of online video and his name is Justin Kownacki."

A more inclusive quote might end, "and his cast of 25 extremely talented and unpaid volunteers," but here at STBD, we take whatever positive press we can get...

Justin Kownacki (STBD) Speaks @ Video on the Net

Justin Kownacki speaks at VON 2007 San Jose. Photo by Cirne.

My VON speech, in which I tout the merits of Something to Be Desired in specifc, and sustainable episodic web content in general, is now available in streaming WMV format.

Egad.

Never before has so thin and pale a man been so riveting for 7 minutes...

(You can see all the other speeches from VON at that site as well.)

Blog Tag: I'm (Momentarily) It

Justin Kownacki does not play well with others.

Jeff Pulver was recently the recipient of a Blog Tag request and decided to spread the love in my direction during the second phase of the response.

As you may already know, Blog Tag is a way of getting the people on your blogroll to mention information they might not otherwise divulge in the course of their standard blogdays. Five things, to be specific. So, without further ado:

Five Things You May Not Know About Justin Kownacki:

1. I can neither swim nor ride a bike.

2. I dropped out of high school when I was 16.

3. I self-published a 7-issue comic book miniseries (with my father's money) that was sold nationally and landed me an autographing gig at Mile High Comics in Denver -- all under a pseudonym.

4. I once drove from Pittsburgh to Phoenix in 32 straight hours, with only a 4-hour nap break in the parking lot of an Oklahoma City truck stop.

5. I have survived having my car totalled while being rolled over a full 360 degrees.

Your turn. I'm tagging: Michael Bailey, Chris Brogan, Dave Pollard, Ann Turiano and the gang at Should I Drink That?.

(PS: It helps to email the people you're tagging, so they know they've been tagged and don't appear to be ignoring you.)
